Library renovations are guided in part by the Library Master Plan. Approved in 2023 by the
San Diego City Council, the Plan provides a long-range vision and strategy for modernizing
Library facilities, technology, and programming. To develop the Plan, Library Foundation SD and
the San Diego Public Library spent years listening to the needs of the communities across the
city, analyzing internal and external data, and meeting with key stakeholders and officials. The
Library Master Plan incorporates input from more than 11,000 San Diegans who participated in
surveys, focus groups, and a series of listening sessions at every Library location.

In early June, University Community Library reopened with
new furniture for public reading areas, new flooring,
sound-dampening panels in the community room, and
landscaping improvements. The Library is also home to 15
works of art from the City’s Civic Art Collection—be sure to
check them out on your next visit.

Renovations continue at the former Logan Heights Library
building, which has been vacant since 2009. Built in 1927, the
historic structure is being transformed into a multi-use
community building that will serve as a teen space, community archive, and computer lab. A new Digital Memory Lab
will be at the center of this community hub, funded by the
Library Foundation SD and a Mellon Foundation grant.
Outfitted with technology and digitization equipment, the
Digital Memory Lab will teach patrons how to access,
digitize, and share information and memories. Converting
these analog materials to digital formats will enable participants to celebrate local histories and the cultural heritage of
the community. The Lab will also facilitate research, engage
local youth in internship and workforce opportunities, and
programming that promotes intergenerational exchange.
Construction is anticipated to be completed in winter 2027.

The renovated City Heights/Weingart Library Performance
Annex is expected to open later this summer. This expansion
project adds a green room, dressing rooms, lobby, and box
office to the existing Performance Annex building, allowing
the theater to host larger performances and programs. The
courtyard will also be transformed into an accessible and
welcoming space. Expect to see even more concerts, dance
classes, and live theater performances on the stage soon!
